November 18

Ben had his lesson this morning. I only wish I had taken more videos of the kids painting, and sooner.  What I love about the way children paint is the fluid natural movement of their bodies. The way they just let the thoughts flow as they paint. I am under the impression that he made the decision that the dabs of paint represented steps up to the studio, simultaneously to painting the dabs. I only thought to record afterwards and so you will see me asking him to re-explain a few seconds later for the camera. Yet I think you can still take a moment to take a fresh breath of air from this little video.

This is the truth: I watch children paint in order to study their freedom of movement and sincerity. They really teach me how to drop my pretenses and shoulds, how to get in touch with my natural self. Picasso loved children's' art, too. He said, "It took me 12 years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child."

Thank you, Ben for my art lesson.
